Bosque Escola Avelãs

It is a forest school or pre-primary school for boys and girls between 3 and 6 years old that is developed outdoors in nature. The education methodology emphasizes respect for the curiosity of the children and the use of natural elements to learn. Thus, we combine nature and respectful free play.

At the moment it takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. The goal is to be running five days a week.

We have a team of accompanying educators who alternate depending on which day of the week, but there is always two per day. There is also normally a voluntary adult.

Food is included – prepared every week by one of the families – vegetarian, seasonal and as ecological as possible. Children must bring a backpack with their mid-morning snack and water.

We follow the school calendar of Portugal.

This is a community project. We are currently 5 families and we want to reach 8 families.

The children who attend the Forest School are from many countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, New Zeland) so multiculturalism and multilingualism is one of our riches. The predominant language is Portuguese but there is always a second language spoken at the same time, which is usually English.

The project started in 2017 and is sponsored by Descalças Cooperativa Cultural and Terra Purna permaculture project.
